The Offer
Chipotle Mexican Grill (NYSE: CMG) is closing out its Chipotle Honey Chicken limited-time protein with a one-day digital promotion on August 27: guests who enter code PROTEIN at checkout on the Chipotle app or Chipotle.com receive a free double protein portion on any full-priced burrito, bowl, or salad entrée. The offer is valid in the U.S. and Canada only through digital channels — the brand's 4,200-plus locations are participating, but in-restaurant orders and third-party delivery platforms are excluded.
The mechanics lean hard on owned digital channels, a familiar playbook for Chipotle, which has used app-exclusive promos to drive loyalty enrollment and direct order volume for years. Redemption is capped at one use per eligible transaction, and the offer cannot be stacked with other promotions. Mixed-protein orders will be charged for the higher-priced protein, and availability is subject to supply at each location.
LTO Wind-Down Strategy
Chipotle Honey Chicken — marinated with smoky chipotle peppers and finished with pure honey — has been one of the chain's more talkative limited-time proteins since launch, drawing consumer interest around the heat-and-sweet flavor profile. Stephanie Perdue, Senior Vice President of Brand Marketing at Chipotle, framed the August 27 event as a send-off: "Fans have made their love for Chipotle Honey Chicken clear, so we couldn't send it back to the vault without one last celebration."
The "back to the vault" language signals the LTO is being retired rather than permanently discontinued — a common QSR tactic that keeps demand elevated for potential future returns. For convenience operators watching the fast-casual segment, Chipotle's ability to generate earned media and digital traffic around a protein exit is a useful benchmark for foodservice program limited-time offer design.
What Operators Should Watch
Chipotle flagged that additional menu innovation is coming this fall, including new flavors and expanded customization options — a signal the brand intends to maintain promotional momentum heading into the fourth quarter. With more than 4,200 units system-wide across the U.S., Canada, the U.K., France, Germany, and the Middle East, each digital promotional cycle generates scale that single-store operators and smaller foodservice-at-cstore programs simply cannot match organically.
Still, the underlying mechanics translate: digital-exclusive redemption codes tied to a product's final days create urgency, drive app engagement, and capture transaction data — levers that convenience retailers with loyalty programs can replicate at their own scale when managing roller-grill protein rotations or dispensed beverage LTOs. The Chipotle playbook reinforces that the exit of a popular limited-time item can be as much of a traffic driver as the launch.
